Thailand’s commitment to advancing science and technology took centre stage at the STS Forum 2024 in Kyoto, Japan, where Ms Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), led a delegation of executives, researchers, and lecturers from leading research and higher education institutes under MHESI, Thailand. The event, recognised as the world’s largest science and technology forum, serves as a platform for leaders across fields to exchange perspectives and knowledge on the role of science and technology in society. The forum gathered over 1,000 participants, including ministers, world-class science and technology leaders, and public and private sector executives from around the world, as well as experts and young leaders.
Ms Supamas was invited to speak at the Opening Plenary Session alongside ministers and agency leaders on the topic “The World in 2024 — What do we need from S&T?”. The Minister noted that the world is facing challenges such as natural resource constraints, environmental problems, and biodiversity loss, all of which impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To address these issues, collaboration between governments, international organisations, the private sector, higher education institutions, and creative individuals is essential. Thailand’s new government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is placing significant emphasis on science and technology, with MHESI playing a critical role in advancing the country’s digital economy, green technology, and future vehicles through research and innovation.
Minister Supamas also highlighted the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI for education while preparing to tackle global challenges, such as the climate crisis, which has led to typhoons and floods in many Asian countries. Thailand has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. Furthermore, the country is committed to advancing STEM education for the next generation to solve future problems.
“I believe international cooperation will be key to developing and sharing knowledge at national, regional, and global levels, enabling us to create a sustainable and balanced world through innovation,” said Ms Supamas.
Additionally, Minister Supamas delivered an opening speech at the “Science and Technology for Future Transition” meeting, hosted by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), during the STS Forum 2024. Prof Dr Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the office of MHESI, and Dr Wiparat De-ong, Executive Director of NRCT, also delivered welcome remarks at the meeting. Moreover, five young leaders from NRCT received certificates of recognition.
