The carving, which is most likely Continental, shows a woman going to the market. The wood carving has a brown finish which gives it the dark brown coloring. The woman is wearing a long dress with an apron on top of it. She is also wearing a ruffled collar. The woman is carrying a basket on her left arm and holding an umbrella in her right hand. The woman is carved to show motion and seems to be walking forward. She is on a rectangular base which conveys the impression that the woman is walking on a rocky road. She is looking forward with her head slightly tilted upwards. The carving shows great details such as the woman’s facial details, the ruffles on her collar, the buttons on the front of her dress, the details of the basket, and the details of the umbrella to mention a few. The carving is very well done was obviously done by an accomplished sculptor. A well-done piece made by what appears to be a master carver, which will make a nice addition to your carved wood figures collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Unknown but it would appear to be from the mid to late 1900s (Mid to late Twentieth Century). Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Size: Measures ~11 3/4" high and the base measures ~4" by ~3 3/8". The piece weighs slightly over one pound and one ounce. Maker: Unknown. Marks: Unmarked. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice piece of wood carving, which would make a worthy addition to your collection. Condition: The carving is in very good condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It is a bit soiled and has many scratches to the surface and losses of finish throughout. There is a small loss to the woman's nose. This may also be that the nose is was banged-up and lost some of the finish.
