Vintage Chicken Figurine Carved from Bracket Fungus This vintage figurine is shaped like a chicken and was carved from a gill bracket fungus. It was purchased over thirty five years ago in Thailand; my mother-in-law purchased this on one of her several tours in the Peace Corps in the early to mid 70s. The figurine measures approximately 11 inches long by 3 and a half inches wide by about 4 and a half inches tall. As you can see from the photos, there are some details carved into the top of the figure depicting the beak, eyes, feathers, etc.; the underside shows the crevices in the surface of the bracket ("shelf-like") fungus. Because of the age of the piece, the surface has a nice light caramel color to it. Several of the photos show a reddish color on the edges. This color does not actually exist on the figurine itself; it is an artifact from the camera. The figurine is not light weight; it has some weight to it. The carvings and wood have a nice seasoned look to them. The only place where I think the item is showing its age is in the beak area; it looks as though the beak may have broken off, although I am not certain. If it did, it happened years ago since the fungus in the beak area has the same aged patina as the rest of the piece. This is a nice item for the collector of chickens, or even of carved fungi.
