One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca has to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountain Sierra Zapoteca three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. Most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. You just have to love the whimsy and creativity in these dragon wood carvings! So cool and so unusual! This figure is hand carved and painted by Javier Blas, the son of Medardo Blas Sr. It is a gift that Javier has learned from his father, as Medardo passed away from a brain tumor and no longer able to do his art. Javier commented to us about the beauty of being able to carry on his father's art form. I love it! This fantastic rabbit is one of our newer pieces from Javier Blas, and I just love it! The positioning of the carving is so cool, as it looks to be stretched out and ready to leap through the air! I love the long legs and the sweet face, along with the oversized ears. The sense of motion is exceptional for an affordable piece. Full of whimsy and detail! A standout piece at this price!
