Description Have you heard of The Peasant Art? The Peasant Art Movement was proposed by the printmaker Kanae Yamamoto in 1919. The idea was to teach young people in rural areas how to make handicrafts, providing them with a sideline job during the off-season and encouraging their participation in art activities they had not been involved in before. Wood carvings, embroideries, and textiles produced in Ueda, now Nagano Prefecture, quickly gained a reputation, and the movement spread throughout the country. However, the movement gradually declined with the onset of war. This book introduces various productions, mainly Koppa Dolls (carved from wood with motifs of familiar people and their daily lives), which have been made in various parts of Japan again in recent years, along with their origins. The book also includes commentary on The Peasant Art Movement, its relationship with Kumabori (bear carvings) of Yakumocho in Hokkaido, which began to be made around the same time, and an introduction to works currently being produced in Nagano, among other things. It is an introductory book containing various contents for those who are new to The Peasant Art Movement.
