Description
This is an Antique 14" Hand Carved Decorated Folk Art Ladle. When I went to research this great old carved piece, I did not have any particular expectation of finding a close comparable on ebay. However, I was amazed to find a piece recently sold on ebay live auction as part of a lot of two fold at pieces. One of the two pieces is a ladle that looks to me, from a layman's perspective like it is very, very likely carved by the same artist. There are some differences in the details of the designs on the two ladles, but they appear to me to be the same in overall style on applied carving, overall styling of proportions and design down the handle, one-piece carved opening of the back of the handle, carving around the lip of the bowl, and other aspects of the design. The size and proportions also match. If you would like to view the sold item and make your own evaluation with respect to the artisan, you can enter 'relief-carved wood items ladle' in the ebay search box, and then check the Sold box in ebay search refinements in the left column. The ladle is 14 1/4" long with a 4" x 3 1/2" oval bowl with a 2 1/2" depth. The carving on the flat face of the handle start with a bird long beak and spiky featchers at the top. Next is a carved man with long hair held in place by a headdresss or head band. He appears to be holding a feather in his right hand. Next on the handle is what I would have described as a sunburst. The ladle referred to above as a very comparable design. The seller described it as a starburst. I do not know which characterization would be correct. Other decorations make the transition from the narrowing of the handle to the bowl. On the back, the transition from handle to bowl appears to be a hand holding the bowl. The seller of the other ladle suggested an age attribution as 19th Century. That looks to me like it might well be correct but we are not experts in this are and I cannot provide any specific age attribution. Condition The ladle is in excellent condition and we will guarantee your satisfaction with the condition. There are a couple on naturally occuring knots in the wood. If you look at the back in the area where the sunburst is carved on the front, you will see a small knot hole where there was a tiny twig / branch. On the front where this came through, you will see a corresponding dark spot from the knot on the sunburst. In the same manner, there is a larger knot on the back, that is seen as a dark know spot on the front in the area of the man's knee.
